Career Management is sex related
Leadership is not related to sex, but career management is. To trust one's own capabilities and potential is one of the most important things for a woman, especially in the early career.
British leadership coachies say that women in leadership roles seem to seek approval, that they need support in their career to be reminded of their own capabilities. They also say, that women talk differently about their careers or their wishes for career advancement. Sometimes the inevitable humble way of "talking down" their leadership visions or skills might quite wrongly be interpreted as insecurity and indecisiveness.
This puts pressure in understanding the Female Talent. Especially in early career, younger women do not want to be singled out, but they wish to be treated similarly as all other leadership candidates. They should, however, receive individual leadership coaching in order to support their self-awareness. The goal should be to improve belief in oneself and their own potential.
Career Management is increasingly important for women. Woman's career is different from a man's career. F.ex. parenthood has an impact. It is important to reflect, find own strengths, recognise career transition points and to plan ahead. Career should be managed with a determined vision of one's own values and purpose. It is also important to ask for support and attention.

In my coaching & mentoring sessions we talk a lot about self-confidence, feedback and the "Internal Critic". Self-confidence builds along one's career and one decisive factor is the feedback we receive along the way. Direct boss seems to have a tremendous effect on one's self-confidence. There are good bosses, but room for development too. Many remember their high school teacher, a sports coach or another mentor in life, who has seen the potential and encouraged to take further steps.
The biggest hinder in a woman's career seems however to be the voice in her head "the Internal Critic". We have c. 60.000 thoughts a day and most of these thoughts we produce ourselves. It is important to start listening to what we tell ourselves daily, how kindly we talk to ourselves and whose voices we hear. Sometimes it can be feedback from years back. We should start focusing on the good thoughts, that increase one's potential.

A woman's career is different from a man's. Women tend to study further and often, tend to reflect and tend to take values into account when making career decisions. All good things for a leader.
So when building your career, recognise possible breaks from parental leaves, studies, assignments abroad and possible layoffs. A lot will happen in your decades of career, so pace yourself. Lead your career and build your self-awareness. Remember to talk about your visions, ask for feedback, be visible and dream.
Career Management and self-awareness are skills we can learn.
